Yes, the 80-hour week is a bit of an exaggeration. On that regime, people would get so tired before the year had closed that the whole plot would collapse. But 50- or 60-hour weeks are physically possible. Nevertheless, in time, these hours erode motivation. That seems to be where the unplanned part of the software industry is today.

The Bid Is Different from the Estimate

As we observed in Part II, software estimating starts with the size (functionality) of the product and the process productivity of the project organization. The organization’s productivity is derived, preferably, from experience on past projects. The size estimate comes from what the team learns about the project during the Elaboration Phase. To make a realistic estimate, the team has to pursue the phase to the point where it has a good grasp of the amount of functionality to be implemented in the Construction Phase.
